How to choose a good level 1 deck?
The example is about context with :
- Only level 1 cards
- No rules
You must pick:
- 1 card with a good up number
- 1 card with a good left number
- 1 card with a good down number
- 1 card with a good right number
- 1 card pretty well balanced
How choosing them?
Analyze wich is the best number of the level cards from each side:

Put the cards in order:

Make comparative statistics:

Now we can deduce:
- Up card : Funguar seems better than Red Bat
- Left card : Cockatrice is obviously the best card for that as it can flip every cards in this level 1
- Right card : Gesper seems better than Fastitocalon
- Down card : Gayla, Gesper and Caterchipillar seems overall better than Zombie Soul for that. Gesper is already good for the right side and Gayla seems powerfull than Caterchipillar. So Caterchipillar seems the best card for that down side.
- the last card should a card which can fit well the rest. In that case, I suggest Geezard, Bite Bug or even Gayla to complete the deck.
Now we can conclude with a potential level 1 deck :

Of course this is just an example and this analyze doesn't take count about all the factors that Triple Triad presents. But It could be a good approach for all the new players who don't know which cards they should pick for a start.

part of the fun, as a new player, was to figure out yourself what decks worked well, and why. the experimentation of doing just as you've outlined above, except by the new player, was part of the fun. And, when you finally do find a deck that worked perfectly, the satisfaction was awesome
in my opinion, it would be best to let players figure out their decks. I appreciate the thought of wanting to help new players, of course ok
remember back to when we were all brand new players....when you "figured out" THAT AWESOME DECK that you could own the AI with and most other new players like yourself...it was a great reward and feeling to know that YOU figured out this perfect deck heheheh

Mine is
Funguar
Gesper
Cockatrice
Caterchipillar
Fastiticulon-F
Because they work in such harmony together.
Though I'd take a different mix when playing with same/plus.
